All sewing machine are made with different needs in mind. For some, price and size count and the Michley LSS-202 Lil' Sew & Sew Mini is as cheap as they come and extremely small.
Do not think, though, that such a keen price means a low quality piece of kit.
The price and size, obviously lead to some limitations but if you are in the market for an affordable and ultra-compact machine then take the time to see if the Michley will offer what you need. It's not for everyone but there are definitely some plus points.
It's a 1-stitch model with no reverse function or length control but for those just beginning this simplicity can work as an advantage. With 2 speeds, automatic bobbin winding and the ability to sew using either the foot pedal or the handy start/stop button, the Michley is certainly not a toy.
The portability means that if you regularly travel with your sewing machine you'll have no snags carrying it around with you.
Here are some of the features available with the Michley:
- 1 stitch
- Preset stitch length
- Retractable, vertical spool pins
- Bobbin winding system
- Manual presser foot lifter
- Preset pressure foot pressure
- 2 speed with control
- Start-stop function
- 2 point feed dog
There are no presser feet with the Michley as expected from a sewing machine retailing at this price.
There is an instruction manual but, according to some consumers, there is incorrect information within.
You can easily find videos on YouTube which will clear up any confusing elements.
The Michley comes pre-threaded so pay attention to how this is done and then recreating it yourself will be no problem.
This pre-threading means that setting up initially could not be much simpler. Use the foot pedal or hand switch to start and away you go!
The thread tension can be adjusted without effort by simply turning a screw which is placed in front of the machine.
Amazingly, though, the Michley includes a few accessories for your money. You'll get 4 bobbins, a foot pedal, a needle and threader in the package. There is even a 42 piece sewing kit.
- Extremely quiet when in use
- Very lightweight at just 2.55 pounds
- Price is incredibly low
- Great for beginners and those on a budget
- No reverse function
- Very limited in terms of features
One reported problem is that the bobbin case can work loose. It tends then to move within the throat of the machine. Simply realign this manually. Turn it and gently shake it and the issue should be fixed. You will get a limited warranty with the Michley covering you for 3 months.
As with anything, you will get what you pay for. If you take into account the price and are honest about what you need from a sewing machine then the Michley is perhaps worth thinking about.
For users who want only to make simple items or mend garments, the LSS-202 could be a wise starting point.
Be quite clear about the fact that you will be limited by having only 1 stitch but look at the positives of ease of use and the very low cost. Go in with your eyes wide open.
You can certainly perform a range of basic tasks like making pillows, blankets or clothing for dolls. In many ways, this super-cheap and lightweight sewing machine is ideal for kids.
If you are looking to sew on a regular basis then the Michley is not for you. If, however, you are a starter with only casual usage in mind and budgetary constraints, the LSS-202 is worth checking out.
